Ten mourning doves arrayed on tree branches and the cables connecting our house to the pole in the alley. Heads buried in puffed feather bodies against the cold. Backgrounded by gray sky and white snow roofs.

1 am. Longing for an open window and the sound of speeding motorcycles on the highway.

This is my friend Alex. Alejandro Morales Aponte. I miss him a lot already.

two snapshots

He rolls the dice in his hand and repeats quietly
butthole, butthole, butthole
as a small prayer for good luck with his roll

He stands inches from the tv screen
feet angled towards each other
the right toes resting on the left
intentionally mismatched socks

Narrates a running commentary of what he is doing
in the video game he plays while I sit and watch him

– July 11 and August 25, 2020

July 24, 2020

In the evening
cicadas chorus in trees

sun sets

The reeded whiiiir whiiiir whiiiir
rise fall overlap crescendo drone

We read a chapter

then notice

Silence

All as one
cicadas finish for the day

Then later
night
crickets and katydids sing
soft in grass
disparate soloists
a faint song to match tinnitus ring

Listen

July 6 and July 9, 2020

Lightning bugs
cicadas
branches ripe with leaves breeze
swaying against evening purple sky

The small rabbit eating wild lettuce
in our back yard
sometimes in sun
sometimes in shade
able to hide below our grass

Sitting on the front steps
cicadas rise and fall in waves
wind through the trees

Lightning bugs in the grass near the street

Heat still in the evening
the neighbor walks her dog and says hello

Later, rain and lightning

June 25, 2020

Midnight
fireworks in the distance
occasional cool breeze through the windows

A skunk eating in the back yard
the white of its stripes visible and not much else

Look very carefully
its bushy tail appears as black shadow
against black night

Its head tucked down beneath the grass

the sound of eating

June 13 and June 15, 2020

Awake at night
Rum
Salt caramel ice cream
Kiss singing on tv
Then Depeche Mode
Why am I awake?

Freight train
Motorcycles on the highway
Wind
Small explosions in night air
